James Mooney

British 1944-

James Mooney was born in Kidderminster, England, in 1944. He first moved to South Africa in 1966, before travelling around the world, with longer stints in Australia and England, and returning to South Africa in 1980. He began painting in 1972, which turned serious in the early 1980s. Mooney has painted from miniature to large scale, but he is well known for his small figurative works of nymphs in the forest, women walking along the shoreline, and women posing suggestively.

In 2005, Everard Read, Cape Town, held a retrospective exhibition of Mooney’s work titled “…a Grain of Sand”.
