Hulda Grønneberg

Norwegian 1844-1924

Hulda Grønneberg was a Norwegian landscape painter whose most frequent subjects included mountains, villages, and gardens. She studied at Knud Bergslien’s painting school in Christiania (now Oslo) before training under Hermine Biedermann-Arentz in Munich during the late 1870s. Working en plein air, Grønneberg approached the natural world with direct observation. Although she began exhibiting in the mid 1870s, her most active period was the 1880s, culminating in her participation at the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris. After living in Christiania, she became one of the first artists to settle in Drøbak, where she nurtured an artistic community and continued to paint throughout her life.
