Barry de Villiers

South African 1939-2020

Barry de Villiers was a South African painter, printmaker, and educator whose career spanned more than six decades. Based in Boksburg for most of his life, he developed a versatile practice that moved between abstraction and representation, underpinned by a strong sense of structure and colour.

He trained at the Johannesburg School of the Arts (then part of the Johannesburg College of Education), where he obtained a National Teachers Diploma in Art. His early career as an educator informed a lifelong engagement with both artistic production and community development.

A defining influence on his work was his extended engagement with Namibia (then South West Africa) during the late 1970s and 1980s. The region’s geological formations, expansive landscapes, and muted tonalities informed a body of work that translated the observed environment into a refined abstract language.

De Villiers’ oeuvre encompasses still lifes, landscapes, and abstract compositions, as well as printmaking and mixed media. His later works reflect a more introspective and symbolic approach, exploring themes of spirituality and the subconscious.

He was widely exhibited both locally and internationally, including solo exhibitions in Rome, Athens, and London, and participation in South African and Namibian gallery networks. His contribution to the visual arts was recognised through numerous civic honours, including a Mayoral Lifetime Achievement Award and the naming of the Barry de Villiers Art Gallery in Boksburg. In addition, his works are held in corporate and institutional collections, including Nedbank, the City of Ekurhuleni, and St Anthony’s Hospital, as well as in private collections.
