Catherine de Villiers

South African 1958- 


Catherine de Villiers was born in 1958 in Cape Town to Anna Jonker the sister of Ingrid Jonker.

The artist grew up under the influences of the Sesitgers, who were a powerful group of artists and poets with a political and humanitarian conscience.
She studied psychology at UCT and embraces Jungian theories in much of her work.

Living in Onrust River at El Dorado in the house of Jack Cope for her high school years, she was in the company of many artists and poets such as Majorie Wallace and Gregoire Boonzaaier who guided her in her practice. She studied art under Tertia Knaap and Maxie Steytler at the Onrust Art School.

de Villiers' work features in Tate Modern School of Art collection. She exhibits with Johann Van Heerden Art and Gallery, Lindy Van Nie Kerk Gallery and owns her own gallery, Ethos Art in Bettys Bay and Ethos Art Gallery in Wilderness. She belongs to a body of local artists called The Quay Artists in Hermanus. The artist has also had her art published and featured in a British anthology and an Indian Newspaper.
