Louis-Aimé Japy

French 1840-1916

Louis-Aimé Japy was born in Doubs, France in 1840. He studied in Paris under Camille Corot and François-Louis Français, developing a sensitive approach to landscapes and still lifes. Early in his career, he travelled to Italy, producing works inspired by its scenery, though he primarily depicted the French countryside, especially Jura and Doubs. Japy exhibited at the Salon from 1864, became a Sociétaire des Artistes Français in 1883, and received multiple medals, including silver at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur in 1906. His work is held in collections including the Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands.
