Rhett Martyn

South African 1971-

Rhett Martyn lives, works and teaches in Johannesburg. He is a mid-career artist with over Ten solo exhibitions behind him. Over the years he has worked with various modes of representation in landscape and figurative traditions of sculpture drawing and painting, emphasizing a particular emotive and expressive response to these traditions. In many ways his work references, albeit subliminally, conditions which he perceives to be relevant to the socio/political landscape of South Africa.

“Again, and again and again I return to the simple act of drawing these facades which are defined by simple rules. A grid, one or two vanishing points which establish depth and perspective and black ink. There is peace in this ritual, a sense of accomplishment through simple means, its part meditation, part art, a repetitious act that anchors me in the present.”
