Hezbon Owiti

Kenyan 1946-

Hezbon Owiti is a self-taught Kenyan artist who was born in Nyanza in 1946. While working at the Chemchemi Creative Centre in Nairobi, South African author and activist Es’kia Mphahlele noticed his talent and encouraged him to participate in one of the seminal 1960s Oshogbo Art Workshops.

Owiti’s best-known works reflect his dense, sweeping paint application and his interest in the symbolic meaning that various animals carry. In 1968, he was an artist-in-residence at Sussex University in a three-month programme sponsored by the Fairfield Foundation. Owiti’s work has been included in exhibitions in Nairobi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Poland and the United Kingdom.
