Stanhope Alexander Forbes

Irish 1857 - 1947

Stanhope Alexander Forbes was a British painter born in 1857 in Dublin, Ireland. Educated at the Royal Academy Schools (1874–78) and trained in Paris (1880–82), he was inspired by French plein-air painting and the Breton landscape. In 1889, he married painter Elizabeth Armstrong, and they settled in Newlyn, Cornwall, where Forbes became a central figure in the artist colony later known as the Newlyn School. He co-founded the Newlyn School of Art in 1899 and painted landscapes, genre scenes, and historical subjects, often en plein air. Forbes exhibited widely at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. His works are held in major collections including the Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Penlee House, and the Imperial War Museum.
