Baba Tjeko

South African 1985- 

Baba Tjeko is a multi-disciplinary artist that explores the intersection of past and present through themes of materiality, nostalgia, and modernity. Drawing on vintage aesthetics, historical archives, and technology, he works across various media including charcoal, oil, acrylic, digital illustration, and animation.

Tjeko is known for his bold, colourful designs that reimagine Ditema, the traditional Basotho mural art, creating a new visual language that fuses diverse styles into striking collage paintings and works on paper. His art reflects on history, memory, and human interaction, while questioning societal values in the digital age. In 2025, he presented new work in an Artist Room at SMAC.
