Anya Paintsil

British/Ghanaian 1991- 

Anya Paintsil is a Welsh-Ghanaian textile artist based in London and Glyn Ceiriog. Drawing from her childhood in North Wales and her Fante heritage, she combines techniques such as rug-making, applique, and hand embroidery with afro hairstyling to create large-scale figurative portraits. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Manchester School of Art in 2020, her work addresses the politics of Black representation, exploring themes of racism, class, and femininity. Paintsil exhibited at the 2020 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, and her works are held in collections like the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the National Museum of Wales.
