Jacqueline Griffin-Jones

South African 1959-

Jacqueline Griffin-Jones was born in Port Elizabeth and studied at Rhodes University where she received her MFA in 1989. She has been involved in Art Education since then in Makhanda (Grahamstown), Cape Town and the UK and presently paints full-time in Makhanda.

“My earlier work was inspired mainly by the Eastern Cape landscape and was strongly expressive and emotive. After eight years away living in Cape Town and London, the landscapes have become more introspective dealing with grey areas, settlements, disused quarries, no-man’s land, commonage, open fields and the remnants of nature that have survived on the edges of the city. I am interested in the way the landscape/bush encroaches into living areas (or vice versa). This subject-matter is often a metaphor for alienation or archaic modernity. The work is driven by history (both personal and local), memory, the proverbial issues of life and death, and always there is a sense foreboding and unease.”
