Manolis Calliyannis was a Greek painter born on the island of Lesbos. He studied architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg before abandoning his studies in 1949 to pursue painting in Paris. Calliyannis' early artwork was influenced by the post-war Parisian art scene and was characterised by restrained, abstract compositions.

Calliyannis's return to Lesbos in the 1950s marked a significant turning point in his art, inspiring an enduring engagement with the Greek landscape. Calliyannis developed a distinctive visual language that balanced abstraction and representation, using luminous colour, simplified forms and geometric structure to capture the atmosphere of the Aegean landscape.

Calliyannis's paintings frequently depict the hills, cypresses, olive groves and coastlines of Lesbos, rendered with a sensitivity to light that reflects both Impressionist and Modernist influences. Calliyannis exhibited extensively in Europe, the United States and South Africa, and his work is held in prominent international collections. From 1979 to 1999, he served as director of the Tériade Museum and Library on Lesbos, where he remained until his death in 2010.
