Daudi E.S. Tingatinga

Tanzanian 1966-2015

Born in 1966 in the village of Namochelia in southern Tanzania, Daudi Tingatinga was the only son of artist Edward S. Tingatinga, the founder and creator of the Tingatinga style. Unable to learn from his father, who died when Daudi was only six, Daudi Tingatinga was largely a self-taught artist, with some guidance from Mzee Lumumba.

With his sister, Martina, Daudi built on the style under the Tingatinga tradition created by his father. He went on to establish the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society with the aim of creating a platform to promote the style, and support as well as train local artists. Incorporating new elements into the genre, such as social and political issues, Daudi Tingatinga’s artwork often depicts African daily life, through intricate designs and bright colours.
