Cecilia Steinberg

South African 21st century 

Cecilia Steinberg is a professional architect with a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Pretoria (2005). She studied oil painting briefly with Cyril Coetzee (2010) and joined Marie Stander’s School of Art from 2019 to 2022. Her current body of work engages the concept of "Sacred Spaces” with a particular focus on the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve (Stellenbosch, Western Cape), where a wildfire devastated the landscape in February 2021. With the partial use of harvested charcoal from the site, she investigates the religious concepts of purification by fire as well as the notion of imperfect and subjective beauty.
