Richard Eurich

British 1903-1992

British-born Richard Eurich was a figurative painter who worked as an official war artist for the Admiralty during the Second World War. He is known for his expansive panoramic land- and seascapes. Eurich’s paintings are narrative snapshots of battle scenes, survival stories, and the world around him. His epic depiction Withdrawal from Dunkirk, June 1940 was used by the Royal Navy as their Christmas card for 1940.

Eurich studied art at the Bradford School of Art from 1922 to 1924 and then at the Slade School of Fine Art in London between 1924 and 1927. In 1929, he mounted his first solo show at the Goupil Gallery in London and in 1937 he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy. He went on to join the Academy in 1942 as an Associate member and became a full member in 1953. In 1984, he received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II. Eurich’s paintings are found in many private and museum collections around the world including the National Maritime Museum, Imperial War Museum, Royal Academy, and Tate all in London, UK; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Calouste Gulbenkaian Museum, Lisbon, Portugal; National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; and Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York City, NY, USA.
