Stephen Shore

American 1947-

Stephen Shore, born 1947, is an American photographer best known for his images of unassuming objects and landscapes, and for his pioneering use of colour in art photography. While known for his depictions of ordinary scenes of daily experience, the artist uses colour, composition and clarity to turn these moments into focused meditations.

In 1971, he became the first living photographer to have a one-person show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His book, Uncommon Places, became a major point of reference for young photographers seeking to work in colour in the 80s. He has been the director of the Photography Program at Bard College in New York’s Hudson Valley since 1982.

His work has been exhibited and collected at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Library of Congress, Washington D. C, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
