Jonathan van der Walt

South African 1991- 

Jonathan van der Walt is a visual artist based in Gqeberha, South Africa. He holds a Master's degree in Fine Art Sculpture and is currently an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Visual Arts at Nelson Mandela University. In addition, he is the gallery manager & curator of the Department's Bird Street Art Gallery and oversees the 3D Printing & Technologies Lab for the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

van der Walt's artmaking is interdisciplinary, utilising various mediums and processes. Recently, his interest has been in the digital sphere, incorporating 3D digital modeling and 3D printing technologies into traditional sculptural practice. His latest solo exhibition explores white African identity, heritage, and belonging in postcolonial South Africa.
As a practising artist, he has exhibited in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally. He has been selected as a national finalist in the L'Atelier competition, and the Sasol New Signatures competition on six occasions as well as a finalist in the PPC Imaginarium 2019.

He has also been awarded numerous awards internationally and nationally and artist-residencies in South Africa. In early 2025 he was named on the Art.co.za's Artists to Watch list for 2025 and was acknowledged as a shortlist finalist for the Emerging Artist/Curator category of the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences' HSS Awards 2025.
His work sits in the collections of NMMAM, ArtBankSA, Luciano Benneton and WHAG.
