Robert Longo

American 1953-

Robert Longo is an American artist, photographer, filmmaker and musician. He is best known for his photorealistic drawings of expressive figures, guns, and tigers.

Longo studied sculpture under Cindy Sherman at State University College and graduated with his BFA in 1975. Early into his professional practice, he began producing paintings, drawings and prints, seemingly moving away from his roots. However, Longo views drawing as a sculptural process as he metaphorically carves the forms into the paper.

His work has been met with critical acclaim, having been shown at the 1983 and 2004 Whitney Biennials in New York and the 47th Venice Biennale. It is currently in the collections of various institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
