Clarkson Stanfield

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, born in Sunderland in 1793, was an English painter best known for his maritime scenes and landscapes. Having spent part of his early life at sea, Stanfield drew on his knowledge of ships and the coast in his later paintings, which became recognised for their dramatic scale and romantic treatment of the sea and landscape.

Before establishing himself as a painter, Stanfield gained prominence as a theatrical scene painter. During the Regency period, he worked at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where his elaborate stage designs brought him considerable recognition. Alongside his theatrical career, he developed his practice as a landscape and marine painter and began exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1820.

Stanfield continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy throughout his career. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1832 and became a full Academician in 1835. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections, and he is regarded as an important figure in the development of British maritime painting during the 19th century.
