Alfred Clint

British 1807-1883

Alfred Clint was born in 1807 in Bedford Square, London, as the youngest son of painter George Clint, A.R.A. He developed his artistic skills under his father’s guidance and studied life drawing at a student society in Drury Lane and the Savoy. Clint first exhibited at the British Institution in 1828, later showcasing his work at the Society of British Artists, where he became a member in 1843 and served as president from 1869 to 1881.

Best known as a marine painter, Clint captured scenes from the English Channel, particularly around Jersey, Guernsey, and Sussex. His work was well-received, with 402 contributions to major exhibitions from 1828 to 1879. In addition to painting, he illustrated George John Bennett's Pedestrian's Guide through North Wales and authored Landscape from Nature in 1856. Clint passed away in 1883, at the age of 76, after retiring from art due to failing eyesight. He was buried in Kensal Green cemetery alongside his father.
