Leonard Rosoman

British 1913 - 2012 


Leonard Henry Rosoman, born in London in 1913, was a painter, mural artist, illustrator and teacher. Rosoman pursued his studies from 1930 to 1938, studying at various academies, namely the King Edward VII School of Art, University of Durham, Royal Academy Schools and Central School of Arts and Crafts. He went on to teach perspective at the Reimann School until 1939, after which he was mobilized into the National Fire Service during World War II. In 1943, he was placed at the War Office to illustrate books on firefighting, being appointed as an Official War Artist to the Admiralty the following year. These depictions of firefighters are amongst his most noteworthy works.

Rosoman has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and The Fine Art Society. His work is currently held in the Tate, the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum collections.
