Mandy Lake

South African 1968- 

Mandy Lake was born Surrey, United Kingdom in 1968 and spent her formative years in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her early artistic education includes painting guidance from André Naudé and Simon Stone, a degree in history and art history from the University of Cape Town, and training in sculpture and illustration at the Foundation School of Art in Cape Town.

After a successful career in design, illustration, and publishing, Lake dedicated herself to sculptural ceramics and painting. A significant turning point occurred in 2009 when she joined Julia Teale's Spencer Street Studios, where Teale's inspiration led Lake to focus her lifelong fascination with the ocean into her artistic practice. The artist has since forged a distinctive artistic path centred on capturing the dynamic essence of the ocean.

Lake's artistic vision is shaped by two key influences: Impressionism and the contemporary abstraction of Ran Ortner. Working primarily in oil on canvas, a hallmark of Lake's artistry is her mastery of portraying the ocean's translucent qualities.

The artist has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in South Africa.
