Miné Kleynhans

South African 1990-

Miné's artistic practice is dedicated to uncovering and conveying perceived social narratives, rituals, and shared dispositions in a manner that expresses inclinations toward the mystical and absurd. To this end, Miné’s artworks employ humour and satire to tease out the rich intersections between magical thinking, personal and collective fantasies, ritual, religion, consumer culture and game playing.

Recently her work has revisited the beguilement of childhood toys, puzzles, and games through interactions that are tangible in nature such as manipulation and movement. These works express a yearning for tactility and materiality with the invitation to touch. The medium and aesthetic are nostalgic and deliberately awkward at times.

Developing from these explorations is an adaptation of games and toys, not only as a reference but, increasingly, as a guiding framework for the art-making process itself – using a set of game-like rules and prescriptions that attempt to translate interactions into structural, aesthetic forms and images.
