Otto Modersohn

German 1865-1943

German landscape painter Otto Modersohn, born in 1865, was a landscape painter and co-founder of the Worpswede Art Colony. Born in Soest, he studied at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf and the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Influenced by the French Romantic and Barbizon painters, he created atmospheric plein air landscapes marked by simplicity and emotional depth. After the death of his wife, artist Paula Modersohn-Becker, his work grew more introspective, and he focused on quiet rural and winter scenes. His paintings are held in the Otto Modersohn Museums in Fischerhud and Tecklenburg, as well as in major German collections.
