Montague Dawson

English 1890-1973

Montague Dawson, born in Chiswick, London, was one of the leading British marine painters of the 20th century. Though mostly self-taught, he briefly worked in a commercial art studio before joining the Royal Navy during World War I, where he met seascape painter Charles Napier Hemy, who profoundly influenced his work. Dawson became celebrated for his highly detailed and dramatic portrayals of sailing ships—especially clippers and naval vessels—which combined historical accuracy with atmospheric intensity. Inspired by Britain’s nautical heritage and his own naval service, he earned the title “King of the Clipper Ship Artists.” His works are held in major collections worldwide, including the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth.
