Johannes Holst

German 1880-1965 

Johannes Holst, born in 1880, was a German artist best known for his highly detailed maritime paintings. His work captured a wide range of weather conditions, and the intrigue created by these dramatic scenes made him a highly sought-after artist during his lifetime.

He began his career as an apprentice in the decorative painting studio of marine painter Hinrich Lüdders. While working in Lüdders’ studio, he began creating small paintings of boats, which were primarily influenced by the earlier marine painters Hugo Schnars-Alquist, Anton Melbye and Jack Spurling.

The artist died on July 5, 1965, in Hamburg, Germany, at the age of 84.
