El Anatsui

Ghanaian 1944- 


El Anatsui is a world-renowned Ghanaian sculptor best known for his monumental metal tapestries made from bottle caps and other recycled materials. He studied at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he received his artistic training. Transforming everyday materials into intricate assemblages, Anatsui explores themes of consumption, environmental sustainability, history, and the interconnectedness of Africa and the wider world. His work is distinguished by the flexibility and fluidity of its sculptural forms, challenging conventional boundaries between fine art and craft.

Anatsui’s artwork has been featured in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (2007), the Brooklyn Museum, and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. In 2015, Anatsui was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. His works are held in the collections of leading institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, and Tate Modern. El Anatsui currently lives and works between Nsukka, Nigeria, and Tema, Ghana.
