Joanne Petit-Frère, born in 1987 in New York City, is a Brooklyn-based artist who obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC. She explores the human body as a site of beauty and identity through tapestries, sculptures, and performances. Petit-Frère draws on African Diaspora traditions, Haitian history, and the art of Cindy Sherman. Her work often involves weaving synthetic hair to create vibrant sculptural pieces, and she has crafted these custom hair sculptures for clients such as Beyoncé, Solange Knowles, and Janelle Monáe, among others. Petit-Frère’s artwork has been featured in exhibitions at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA; the New Orleans Museum of Art; and MoMA PS1 in New York City.
