Robert Saidi

Congolese 1936- 

Robert Saidi was born in Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 1963, he graduated from the University of Kinshasa, where he had studied French History, African Culture and Linguistics. Moving to Kampala, he developed his art practice as a painter whilst working as a lecturer in Lingala studies at Makerere University.

Many of Saidi’s paintings are tender portraits of women, often dressed in traditional garments and performing acts of care or embracing moments of leisure.

In 1977 he became a full-time artist and since then has exhibited in Germany, Belgium, Italy, France, the USA and the UK, as well as frequently in Kampala.
