Sifiso Mvelase

20th Century

Sifiso Mvelase was born in 1980 in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal. He demonstrated a talent for sculpting at a very early age, but worked as a gardener to support his family until he joined Ardmore in 2002. His apparently erotic animal sculptures are infused with humour, but address serious social issues such as HIV/AIDS. In 2003 Mvelase initiated a body of educational work addressing HIV/AIDS, which at the time was surrounded by fears and taboos. These pieces were exhibited during International AIDS Day 2009 at the Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg. Mvelase's work has been included in exhibitions worldwide: the ARS 11 exhibition in Finland; the HIV Human Tragedy collection, Istanbul Biennale, 2011; a solo exhibit at the Istanbul Biennale; at the Gerisch Museum in Hamburg, Germany; and the Reina Sophia Museum in Madrid, Spain. He has also exhibited at Art Basel, Miami and at the Korean Biennale.
