Michael Armitage

Kenyan 1984- 

Michael Armitage is a British-Kenyan artist best known for his phantasmagoric paintings, which explore Kenyan politics and society alongside the enduring legacies of colonialism. He earned a BA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, London (2007), followed by a Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Academy Schools, London (2010). Armitage is particularly recognised for painting on lubugo—a traditional bark cloth made from the Ugandan fig tree—which serves as the distinctive support for works that weave together narratives drawn from current events, internet gossip, and personal memories of Kenya.

Armitage’s artwork has been presented at major international institutions, including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Palazzo Grassi (Pinault Collection), and the Studio Museum in Harlem. In 2022, he designed a new £1 coin for the Royal Mint. Michael Armitage’s artworks are held in the collections of leading museums, including Tate, London; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Michael Armitage is currently active as a practising artist.
