Lebohang Motaung

South African 1992-

Lebohang Motaung (b. 1992, Evaton) is a South African artist and hairstylist who grew up in Sebokeng. She holds a Diploma and B-Tech in Fine Art from the Vaal University of Technology,
with a specialization in printmaking. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, three solo exhibitions, and major art fairs like the Turbine Art Fair (2014-2023) and FNB Joburg Art Fair (2016-2023). In 2021, she was part of the Textures: The History and Art of Black Hair exhibition at Kent State University, Ohio, where her prints were later added to the museum’s collection, along with works in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

As both an artist and hairstylist, Motaung’s work is a reflection on the role of hair in female identity and empowerment. She explores how hair serves as a medium for self-expression, creativity, and transformation, confronting stereotypes and challenging the politics of beauty and self-definition. Her work emphasizes the potential of hair to symbolize shifting identities, self-love, and the power of personal agency.
