Claire Manicom

South African 1993- 

Claire Manicom is a Johannesburg-based artist attempting to comprehend and interpret the world. She completed a course in Industrial Design at the University of Johannesburg in 2014, and during a period of hospitalisation soon afterwards, she had a life changing moment, an awakening. Art was her sanctuary during this time, giving her a place and direction in the world. Manicom works across multiple media including sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Curiosity is at the core of her art. She works intuitively, manipulating objects and materials to find meaning. Through her work she tries to interpret and communicate a ribbon of observations and experiences, moments from thousands of places, all at once cluttered and clear. “My art is about SEEING those wonderful waylaid moments and places that are set adrift. That is what I try to capture,” she says.
