Karla Nixon

South African 1990- 


Karla was born in Durban, South Africa. She spent her formative years on a sugarcane estate in Swaziland before relocating back to Durban, where she is currently based. Karla predominantly works with paper: she hand-cuts and sculpts intricate images and objects drawn from her surrounding environments.

Karla completed her Master's Degree in 2017 in Fine Arts at the Durban University of Technology. During her studies, Karla was recognised for her talent with the Sam Newton Trophy and the Deans Merit awards, as well as been awarded an NRF Scholarship. Karla was granted a three-month artist residency in Bremen, Germany, in 2017-18.

She has been selected numerous times as a finalist in both the Sasol New Signatures and Absa L’Atelier art competitions. Karla has also participated in a number of group exhibitions across South Africa, with her solo showcase being presented at the KZNSA in 2019. Karla's artworks are included in several private collections in South Africa, Lebanon, Australia, Spain and Holland. The public collections which hold her works are the Durban Art Gallery and The National Art Bank. Karla is currently a lecturer for the Arts Extended Program at the Durban University of Technology.
