Karla Nixon

South African 1990- 

Karla Nixon was born in Durban, South Africa. She spent her formative years on a sugarcane estate in Swaziland before relocating back to Durban, where she is currently based. Nixon predominantly works with paper, which she hand-cuts and sculpts into intricate images and objects drawn from her surrounding environments.

Nixon completed her Master's Degree in 2017 in Fine Arts at the Durban University of Technology. During her studies, she was recognised for her talent with the Sam Newton Trophy, the Dean's Merit Award, and a National Research Foundation (NRF) Scholarship. Nixon was granted a three-month artist residency in Bremen, Germany, between 2017 and 2018.

She has been selected numerous times as a finalist in both the Sasol New Signatures and Absa L’Atelier art competitions. Nixon has also participated in several group exhibitions across South Africa, with her solo showcase presented at the KZNSA in 2019. Her artworks are included in several private collections in South Africa, Lebanon, Australia, Spain, and Holland and the public collections of the Durban Art Gallery and the National Art Bank. Nixon is currently a lecturer for the Arts Extended Program at the Durban University of Technology.
