Nikhil Tricam is a South African artist based between Johannesburg and Durban. Tricam trained as an architect, and his work focuses on the human relationships and experiences formed within and against the backdrop of the urban realm with a focus on large-scale ink and acrylic gestural works. Tricam draws on his experience in the realm of design to inform his narratives, while absorbing elements of contemporary, street, and abstract expressionistic art to root his compositions in time. This body of work investigates the experience of our bodies within the physical spatial realm we inhabit. The figures, objects, and marks are memories of elements inherent to our understanding of habitat. Geometric forms become caves, mountains, or buildings. Bold, dark strokes are vines, branches, or electrical infrastructure in the urban wilderness. Through the complex geometric and spatial interplay of these elements, we are invited to contemplate our experience within our habitat.
