Joseph Oppenheimer

German 1876-1966

A celebrated portrait, landscape, and still-life painter, Joseph Oppenheimer was born in Germany but spent much of his career in England and Canada. Demonstrating early precocity, he enrolled at the Munich Academy at age fifteen. He traveled extensively across Rome, Naples, New York, and Egypt, where he painted a portrait of Cecil Rhodes. Oppenheimer established an international reputation for high-society portraiture, capturing figures such as Albert Einstein, Richard Canfield, and Generals MacDonald Moody and Grenville M Dodge in a style that combined precise realism with impressionistic brushwork.

In 1910, he received a Gold Medal at the 10th Munich International Exhibition. He was a dedicated educator and a member of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, the Chelsea Arts Club, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Following his daughter’s move to Canada in 1949, Oppenheimer divided his final years between London, Montreal, and New York, painting until his death in Montreal in 1966.
