Sethembile Msezane

South African 1991- 

KwaZulu-Natal born Sethembile Msezane is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Cape Town. Her art, which encompasses performance, film, photography, sculpture, and drawing, is imbued with spiritual and political symbolism that investigates the spaces and narratives of history and commemoration. Msezane’s work also highlights the historical absence of the Black figure – particularly female – from these areas.

Msezane received both her Bachelor in Fine Arts (2012) and Masters in Fine Art (2017) degrees from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited throughout South Africa and internationally including at the 14th Dak’art Biennale in Dakar, Senegal (2022); Investec Cape Town Art Fair, RSA (2020 and 2018); Stellenbosch Triennale, RSA (2020); Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, USA (2019); Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town, RSA (2017 and 2016); Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town, RSA (2017); and 1:54 Contemporary Art Fair, London, UK (2017).
