Liz Hansen

South Africa 1962-

Born in Johannesburg in 1962, Liz currently lives in Noordhoek, Cape Town. After matriculating she worked as an architectural draughtswoman, until having a beautiful family. Liz has always lived creatively, developing her unique style of art which can be described as two-dimensional sculpture, and constantly evolving within each series. She loves new challenges and the possibilities of the “what if” — experimenting with new materials and techniques in mixed media but always maintaining her personal and unique style. Being self-taught has meant she has the freedom to try anything without the constraints of traditional rules.

“My artistic mantra is, “Personal growth is the art of reframing life experiences.” Walking in Silvermine Nature Reserve is a meditative necessity for me, and a great inspiration for my art. This artwork is from a series I’m currently working on and enthralled with. I cut up and tore apart previously unresolved artwork and was captivated while rearranging the segments into a new and enlivened multi-layered collage — new ideas and memories revealing themselves along the way. Some of the pieces were repositioned upside down, representing the introspective thoughts whilst walking — the threads and life of the previous artworks still apparent. Other parts remained as they were, adding to and giving abstract glimpses of the everchanging mountain moods. An additional layer of rolling vistas is woven through both the snapshots of the past and scenes of the present. This creates a new equilibrium and calmness, and fuses past and present moments into a balanced resolved whole.”
