Benon Lutaaya

Ugandan 1985-2019 


Benon Lutaaya was born in Uganda in 1985. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education from Kyambogo University in Kampala, Uganda. In 2011, Lutaaya was awarded a residency at the Bag Factory and relocated to Johannesburg, where he remained after the residency ended. Lutaaya was well-known for his paintings and collages, which primarily feature portraits or figures. His artwork was inspired by his own experiences and observations, and it explored issues of isolation, identity, survival, and vulnerability.

In 2016, Lutaaya founded Project Space, a nonprofit arts organisation in Johannesburg dedicated to advancing African Art, with a particular focus on empowering womxn artists. A bright figure in the arts community, Lutaaya sadly passed away from cancer in 2019.
