Lyrene Kühn-Botma is an artist, lecturer, and researcher, currently serving as Programme Director at the Department of Fine Arts, University of the Free State. She holds an MA in Fine Arts (cum
laude) from the University of the Free State, where she was awarded the Dean’s Medal for academic excellence. Kühn-Botma has participated in numerous exhibitions and national competitions,
including the SASOL New Signatures art competition. In 2022, she served as curator and artist for the Good Neighbours exhibition at NIROX Sculpture Park.

Her artistic practice explores themes of loss, grief, and memory through drawing, digital drawing, and printmaking. She investigates personal bodily experiences of pain and loss, using found stones as symbolic elements. Kühn-Botma’s recent work shifts towards examining the process of artmaking as a ritual of commemoration, reflecting on the act itself as a meaningful gesture of remembrance.
