Vanessa Tembane

South African 1995- 

Vanessa Tembane draws inspiration from her mother's narratives, exploring their influence on her identity and sense of belonging. Her artwork, primarily collages, merges photographs taken in South Africa with images of her Mozambican relatives, creating unique hybrid compositions. These collages juxtapose photographic cut-outs with fabric details from capulanas (a type of sarong), given to Tembane by her Mozambican family. Through her art, she narrates stories about her origins and an alternative "home" culture she indirectly experienced. Tembane's work allows her to connect with her mother's sense of loss regarding her place of birth and Chopi identity, despite it not being her own experience.
