South African artist Meyer Uranovsky was born in Cape Town in 1939 to Russian immigrant parents. He attended the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art between 1956 and 1960. Following his studies, he worked for several years as a graphic designer in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and London. In 1966, Uranovsky was awarded the Cape Salon Prize and held his first solo exhibition at the Wolpe Gallery in Cape Town later that year. He pursued further studies at Hayter’s Atelier 17 in Paris, France, from 1968 to 1969, supported by a bursary he had won the previous year. Uranovsky has showcased his work in both group and solo exhibitions throughout his career, including at Die Kunskamer in Cape Town and in Nice, France, as well as in his adopted hometown of New York City, where he has resided since 1996. In 2006, Uranovsky was recognized by the Bronx Borough President, Mr. Adolfo Carrion, Jr., for his contributions to the art and culture of the city. His work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Constitutional Court Art Collection in Johannesburg.
