Harold Voigt was born and educated in Johannesburg. He studied architecture briefly at the University of Witwatersrand and worked in the advertising industry before training in painting under Bill Ainslie. In 1975 he moved to the mountainous Lowveld region of Mpumalanga province with his wife and fellow artist Leigh Voigt. Primarily a painter of unmistakably South African landscapes, Voigt is also known for his abstract paintings, interiors, and those of the human figure. With exacting construction, Voigt focused on textural qualities and the interplay of light and shadow in his paintings. Having studied architecture, he compared the complex discipline of art to science, requiring the balancing of tension between elements and, while he experimented with different techniques utilising a wide range of materials and even mixing his own pigments, there are tried and true techniques in his work that are executed with the precision of great understanding and familiarity.

Harold Voigt participated in several group shows throughout his career, including Vita Art Now at Johannesburg Art Gallery in 1987. He exhibited extensively in solo exhibitions, including Harold Voigt ­– A Retrospective of Paintings from 1972 to 2019, at Everard Read in 2019. Voigt is represented in numerous public collections and extensively in private collections throughout South Africa.
