Mariapaola McGurk

South African 1980- 

Mariapaola McGurk (known as MP) specializes in hand-cut paper, a traditional art form in many countries worldwide, such as Ukraine, China, and Japan. However, as it is an uncommon practice within South Africa, McGurk has had to develop this skill without guidance, which has led to a very contemporary interpretation of a traditional art form. She has focused on paper cutting for the last twelve years. In 2022, McGurk won the Thami Mnyele Awards – Art on Paper section and was chosen as the featured artist for the BASA (Business and Arts South Africa) Awards. She holds an Honours in Visual Arts (Cum Laude) from the University of Johannesburg and an Executive MBA (with merit) from Henley Business School. Currently, she is a PhD candidate at the Johannesburg Business School with a DPhil in Digital Transformations.
