Mpho Machate

South African 1984- 

Mpho Machate is a Johannesburg-based artist who was born in Gauteng in 1984 and raised in Xanthia Village, Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.
Machate completed a B-Tech in Fine Art from Tshwane University of Technology in 2016.

The artist's upbringing in the Bushbuckridge shaped the foundation of his artistic language, influencing his approach to material and space. His early interest in clay began as a form of play, which later developed into a recognized interest in visual art. Further, the artist has made use of non-traditional materials such as cooking oil which he found available from daily life and connects to domestic and cultural contexts. The natural environment surrounding him was equally influential.

He began exhibiting professionally with the Touch group show at Turbine Art Fair in 2017. His work is part of several significant collections, including the J.P. Morgan Chase Art Collection, Nando's and the National Museum Bloemfontein. He currently maintains a studio practice at August House in Johannesburg.
