Joy Adeboye

Nigerian 1998-

Joy Adeboye (b. 1998, Nigeria) is a contemporary Nigerian artist and painter. She received her BA (2019) in literature from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. Usually drawing on personal references, Adeboye creates layered compositions based on her study of emotional alchemy, spirituality and the general workings of the human mind. Emerging out of the Nigerian panorama, the strength of her narratives are heavily influenced by her literary background as she incorporates a poetic storytelling approach in her practice.

Adeboye’s use of watercolor as her primary medium has been described as both bold and deeply evocative. She is carving a distinctive path within the contemporary revival of watercolor a medium whose history stretches back to the origins of art itself, and which only a few contemporary artists have reinterpreted as a way of navigating the space between reality, fantasy, and political imagination.

Her practice extends this lineage while developing a unique visual language of her own. In earlier works, Adeboye explored a mystical interplay of color and form. For her recent solo project, she produced a new body of work investigating the intimate realms of desire, religion, and sexuality.

Sometimes appearing as collages of layered papers and at other times as singular compositions, these watercolor paintings evoke both the delicacy of petals and the softness of flesh while resisting explicit representation. Through fluid forms and shifting colors, the works move through emotional and psychological landscapes with openness and poetic ambiguity.
