Stephen Bone

British 1904-1958

Stephen Bone, born in 1904 in Chiswick and died in 1958, was an English painter, wood engraver, illustrator, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at Bedales and later at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1922 to 1924. Initially acclaimed for his wood engravings, winning a gold medal at the 1925 Paris International Exhibition, he later became known for his bright landscape paintings and, during World War II, as an Official War Artist with the Royal Navy. Inspired by his extensive travels across Britain and Europe, Bone created small oil panels that captured landscapes with immediacy and clarity. His work is held in major collections, including the Tate Gallery. In 1957, he was appointed Director of Hornsey College of Art.
