Stephen Bone

British 1904-1958

Stephen Bone was the son of the painter and etcher, Sir Muirhead Bone and nephew of Francis Dodd, was a painter, wood engraver, illustrator, writer, and broadcaster. He studied first at the Bedales School, Pietersfeild, and later at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, from 1922 to 1924. Despite initially garnering acclaim for his wood engravings, for which he won a gold medal at the 1925 Paris International Exhibition, he later became known for his bright landscape paintings and, during World War II, as an Official War Artist with the Royal Navy. Inspired by his extensive travels across Britain and Europe, Bone created small oil panels that captured landscapes with immediacy and clarity. His work is held in major collections, including the Tate Britian. In 1957, he was appointed Director of Hornsey College of Art, London.
