Bronwen Findlay

South African 1953-

I was born just before midnight on the last day of 1953. My first few years, of which I remember little, other than from stories and photographs, happened in Kranskop near the Tugela valley. Formal schooling took place in Durban and Pietermaritzburg as did my Technicon and University years. Thereafter my life has consisted of teaching (at schools, tertiary institutions and non-government organizations) and making Art – oil paintings on canvas, printmaking, mosaic commissions. My first solo exhibition was in 1977 at the Walsh Marais Gallery in Durban – I have continued exhibiting both nationally and internationally since. My last three solo exhibitions were held at the Everard Read Gallery in Johannesburg.

Stories and photographs, which play a role in my remembering, continue to play an important part in my work. I weave stories into my paintings as I paint and I document places I have experienced and things I have seen. My paintings and prints constitute a mish mash of my life, sometimes I am inspired by a view into my garden or by petals fallen onto the ground or stars in the sky. I am inspired by other artists; glimpses into a world of Giotto or of Hokusai or 12th century tapestries will emerge alongside my own immediate world. Binding all this together is colour – I like to manipulate paint or printing ink so that my colours ‘sing’. I paint and print in layers – the final image might not emerge as I thought it would, I allow it to change as I work so that in the end the process has determined the outcome.
