Gerard Devoud

Seychellois 1955-

Gerard Devoud, born 1955, is a Seychellois-French artist known for his vibrant depictions of the landscapes, people and everyday life of the Seychelles. The artist developed an interest in art at an early age and is largely self-taught. He held his first exhibition in Victoria in 1974, at the age of nineteen, before briefly relocating to Paris to study plastic arts.

Devoud’s distinctive style combines naïve and abstract elements with vivid colour and simplified forms. Inspired by the tropical landscape of the Seychelles, his paintings frequently depict lush vegetation, beaches, traditional Creole houses, fishermen and local communities. His exuberant use of colour, particularly rich greens, reds and yellows, conveys the intense light and distinctive character of the islands.

Devoud has exhibited extensively internationally, including in Europe, the United States, India and Mauritius. His work has played an important role in bringing the visual culture of the Seychelles to a wider audience. He continues to be closely associated with the artistic identity of the islands, where his paintings celebrate their natural beauty, culture and everyday life.
