Nombuso Dowelani is a 21-year-old visual artist with a journalistic eye, who hails from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal. She is currently completing a BA in Visual Arts at the University of Johannesburg, majoring in painting. Her depictions of women are reminiscent of her childhood, having been raised in a women-led[HC1] household with her grandmother uMaZikode and her aunts.

Contrary to most artists, Nombuso wanted to be a lawyer, but her grandmother encouraged her to study something she was passionate about, seeing her talent before she herself did. The affirmations from the women in her family breathe life into her visual art.
